Artist Development & Music Coaching in Chicago

Becoming a Better Musician Is Bigger Than Getting Better at Your Instrument

At some point, almost every serious musician runs into a strange problem. You can keep getting technically better without necessarily feeling like you're becoming the artist you want to be.

Maybe your playing has improved but you don't know what you actually want to sound like. Maybe you practice constantly and still feel as though you're circling the same few weaknesses. Maybe you're preparing for music school, an audition, a professional gig, or your first record and suddenly realize that being able to play the material is only one part of being ready.

That's where I think artist development becomes useful.

My approach to artist development and music coaching in Chicago is less about giving musicians another curriculum and more about helping them understand what actually needs to happen next. Sometimes the problem is technical. Sometimes it's creative. Sometimes someone needs a better practice system, more experience performing, a deeper understanding of harmony, or simply a clearer sense of what they're trying to build.

Those problems require different solutions, and recognizing the difference is part of becoming a more independent musician.

What We Can Work On

Artist development coaching is intentionally broad because the work depends on where you are and where you're trying to go. We may work on practice strategy, advanced guitar, improvisation, music theory and harmony, composition, songwriting, arranging, ear training, performance preparation, audition coaching, creativity, professional musicianship, music school preparation, artistic identity, or developing and completing original projects.

Some students need a highly specific plan. Others need someone who can look across everything they're doing and identify the connections they're missing.

Often it's a combination of both. The purpose isn't to make you dependent on coaching indefinitely. If we're doing this well, you should gradually become better at diagnosing your own weaknesses, finding useful resources, designing your own practice, evaluating your creative work, and deciding what deserves your attention next.

Artist Development Coaching in Chicago and Online

I offer private artist development, music coaching, guitar lessons, improvisation lessons, composition and songwriting coaching, and music theory instruction in Chicago, along with online coaching for musicians outside the city.

Chicago has been an important part of my own development because it's a city where studying music and actually participating in a musical community can happen at the same time. Lessons matter, but so do rehearsals, gigs, jam sessions, writing with other people, listening to musicians who are better than you, and occasionally being thrown into situations you're not completely prepared for.

That's where a lot of growth happens. There isn't a final version of you as a musician waiting somewhere in the future. Your interests change, your ears change, your standards change, and eventually the things that once seemed impossible become ordinary enough that you start looking for something harder.

The point of artist development is to get better at navigating that process. Not just for the next lesson, audition, record, or performance, but eventually on your own.

Cody is the kindest person I have ever met. The depth of his knowledge of music is remarkable. The direction, support & commitment he gives to his students does not stop. He is well worth the effort & will make you a better musician.
